The University of Louisiana at Lafayette recently played host to the 46th annual Congress of the American Romanian Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The two-day interdisciplinary event held in late April brought together scholars, researchers, inventors and cultural leaders from Romania, the United States and across the globe. Since 1975, the ARA has fostered cross-cultural and interdisciplinary academic collaborations between Romanian and American scholars to advance knowledge in arts, science, technology and education.

"As we mark 50 years of the American Romanian Academy of Arts and Sciences, this congress stands as a powerful testament to the enduring value of global collaboration and interdisciplinary discovery,” said Dr. Gabriela Mustata Wilson, the congress’ chair. She directs the Louisiana Center for Health Innovation at UL Lafayette and is Endowed Chair in Health Informatics in the College of Nursing & Health Sciences.

Wilson continued: “Hosting ARA46 here in Louisiana is not only a celebration of our collective legacy – it is a bold statement about the future we are shaping together – a future where science, culture and humanity are inseparable, and where innovation is rooted in purpose and shared progress.”

The congress included 16 oral presentations, four keynotes, a poster session, networking receptions and a ceremonial MOU signing between local and international leaders to foster ongoing collaboration in arts and sciences.

In remarks welcoming the congress to campus, University President Dr. Joseph Savoie congratulated ARA on its half century of making “our world more connected, more compassionate and more informed.”

“Hosting this congress is a privilege,” Savoie added. “Here at the University, we believe that innovation thrives at the intersection of disciplines, and it grows across borders. From biomedical science and artificial intelligence to literature, history and environmental justice – this congress is a remarkable showcase of interdisciplinary thought and international cooperation.”

Invited to present keynote lectures were: Mihnea Costoiu, rector, POLITEHNICA Bucharest; Paul Sanberg, president, National Academy of Inventors; Gabriela Gabor, Romanian National Commission for UNESCO; and Dave Domingue, Lafayette International Center.

In addition, in a dedicated session aligned with the congress, UL Lafayette relaunched its chapter of the National Academy of Inventors.

Organizers said this relaunch represents a renewed institutional commitment to invention, innovation, and academic entrepreneurship at the University. The chapter will support UL Lafayette researchers and faculty in translating groundbreaking research into real-world solutions. The NAI chapter will also serve as a hub for mentorship and collaboration.

Center for Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity (CCIC)

The Center for Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity (CCIC) brings together multiple and diverse experts from across the University to help our nation prepare for cyberattacks that may impact the country's critical infrastructure.CCIC was founded to examine cybersecurity from the perspective of the cascading impact of a significant cyber incident on the nation’s critical infrastructure, such as that experienced by the 2015 cyberattack on the Ukrainian Power Grid. The Center for the Study of Existential Risk at Cambridge University, UK, now places cyberattacks as a “blue sky hazard” that can take an entire power grid down for a prolonged period. A consequence of such an attack would extend beyond the loss of data; it could completely disrupt the functioning of society, much like a large-scale natural disaster.
