UL Lafayette’s prestigious Carnegie R1 designation
The Carnegie classification of institutions of higher education has designated UL Lafayette as a university with "very high research activity".

LAFAYETTE (KADN) - The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has taken its place in the top level of the nations research institutions. The Vice President for research innovation and economic development says this day is long overdue.

Dr. Ramesh Kolluru SAYS "Today we join a club a top 3 percent of universities in the country have earned this designation about 137 or so and we are now in the same classification as an mip Carnegie or Harvard or Stanford including the Louisiana universities.. Tulane so we join them we join the rest of those universities in the country to be counted among the very best universities".

Only 3% of public and private universities in the united states have achieved R1 status.

The event included students who benefit from this recognition, state senators and professors. U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy says this recognition is big not only for the school and its students but for the state.

Senator Bill Cassidy says "And so it benefits the region benefits the country by the way it also creates wealth there's going to be folks here that get better jobs wise investments spend off which creates its on eco system of itself it can be transformative for community and for a state".

Dr. Pearson Cross department head of political science at UL Lafayette hopes this will encourage more students to do research that impacts lives.

Dr. Pearson Cross says "I hope in the future we're 164 million dollars in research and development funding now so I'm very hoping that we can get over 200 million that we can be as instrumental here as we've been elsewhere UL was one of the crucial building blocks to put the Pfizer vaccine together those kind of breakthroughs are things that UL is all about and we're really looking forward to continuing that as we get to the future"
